About Coes Creek
A residential corner beside farmland and a research station.
The locality takes its name from the creek, which was named after selector Robert Coe, who was killed by a train in 1896. The Queensland Place Names Board approved the naming of the creek and the district on 1 December 1962. Land in the north-east and east of the locality is residential, and the rest is used for a mixture of crop growing and grazing on native vegetation. The Maroochy Research Facility sits on a 64-hectare site at 47 Mayers Road. There are no schools in Coes Creek.
The 2021 Census counted 1,515 people, up from 1,392 in 2016, with a median age of 43. Of the occupied homes, 99.1% were separate houses and 50.0% were owned with a mortgage, with a median monthly repayment of $1,733. Of residents in the labour force, 51.6% worked full-time, and 9.4% of employed residents worked at home.
Trades and labouring are both among the five top occupations. The three topics below cover the step from wages to running your own work.
Three things to get right when you start out
Registering for GST on time
Why it happens
A tradie who leaves a wage job to contract or take on direct customers starts invoicing as a business. Turnover builds as regular work comes in.
Why it matters
The ATO says you must register for GST when your GST turnover reaches $75,000, measured either as this month plus the previous 11 months or as this month plus the next 11 months. You need to register within 21 days of exceeding the threshold. If you don't register when required, you may have to pay GST on sales made since the date you were required to register, plus penalties and interest.
How we help
We help choose structures, register for GST when required, set up Xero, streamline invoicing and receipts and set a simple quarterly BAS and year end plan.
BAS that has fallen behind
Why it happens
When the tools come first and the paperwork comes later, receipts pile up and an activity statement can be missed.
Why it matters
Late lodgement brings penalties, and the longer it runs the harder it is to reconstruct the figures.
How we help
We reconcile transactions, prioritise lodgements to limit penalties and work with the ATO on realistic payment plans where needed. For BAS, we prepare and lodge accurately using reconciled figures and check GST coding to avoid common errors.
Employee tradies and their own returns
Why it happens
Not every tradesperson runs a business. Some are employees who pay for tools, clothing or travel for work.
Why it matters
Work-related deductions need records, and an employee's return is assessed on what can be shown.
How we help
Lomandra Accounting prepares accurate individual returns and offers straightforward guidance.
